Manti

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Taverne Residential - Boulevard Jamar - Brussels

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

I have been saving for this for long. At the last day of our FOSDEM trip we went to this little Portuguese place where we already had some excellent moments at last year’s FOSDEM.

The place is 5 minutes walking distance from the Midi train station (Gare du Sud). It is one of many other Spanish and Portuguese restaurants in this area. 90% of the clients are Portuguese immigrants. Two televisions make sure they are constantly connected to their home land. Culinary connections can be made with two daily main dishes. Most of the time one is fish and one meat. This time I had an excellent blue fish dish: ‘Carapaus grelhados’

You get good red, white and green wine. The price is 11 Euros per dish, including the beverage.

Try this place out - you won’t be disappointed!

Apfelkuchen

apfelkuchen

Ferrara Cafe - Mulberry Street - New York City

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Frank & Nick offers quite good Italian pastries in the heart of Little Italy. Well, to be true, Little Italy today looks more like a theme in Walt Disney. One should visit the Italian neighbourhood in Boston to get a better sense of the descendants of the Italian immigrants in America.

As I said, the pastry was good and fans of the TV series The Sopranos will maybe like the pictures, showing the owner of the cafe and several actors of the series, hanging at the wall. As the place is tourist, the prices are ridiculously high and the waitress did offer an awful service.

Li Hua - Grand Street - New York City

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

The Li Hua is located in the old China Town in Manhattan. It is a quiet place with a cosy atmosphere and the style of the decoration is tasteful. The quality of the ingredients is good and they are fresh. The Korean dishes tasted unknown to us but quite delicious. A dish is in the average 10$. Nice is, that you get a warm cup of tea on entrance.

Republic - Union Square - New York City

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

The Republic was listed in our Marco Polo traveller guide as being a good address for having a meal. The room is a long tube with stylish interior that attracts young people.
It is a bit noisy, so not meant for having a candle light dinner. The Vietnamese food was excellent and the dishes decorated with love. The average price of 10$ is absolutely ok for the quality you get.
The only negative was the chlorinated tab water the waiters constantly refill. The New York tab water contains a lot of chlorine, so you are better of ordering a Tsing Tao or one of the cold and warm teas.

Voland Cafe - Wichertstrasse - Berlin

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

This is one of my favourite places. Both for having an excellent meal and for listening to music. They often play Klezmer, Russian, Yiddish and gipsy music. You should reserve in advance, since this little cosy place is booked out quickly. The Russian and Ukrainian dishes tastes like excellent plain faire.

Cenacolo - Sredzkistrasse - Berlin

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

We had a very nice evening in this Italian restaurant.. The dishes were really delicious and the prices moderate. For example I had a Cannelloni Ricotta for 7.50 Euro, the noodle pastry was home made and the spinach fresh and well flavoured. As entrée they serve a nice bread with garlic, onion and tomatoes which gives you a welcoming start. The ambience is nice and the presentation of the menu appealing.

If the main dish is nice you are tempted to go for a desert. The Panna Cotta and the Tiramisu were both absolutely persuasive (each 3,80).
